About Arocho's American Kitchen

Collin Arocho: chasing my American Dream

After spending most of my life in rural Southeast Ohio, in 2016 I decided to pack all my things and set out for a new adventure. That’s when I moved across the Atlantic Ocean to start a new life with my Dutch girlfriend (now wife) Susanne, in the Netherlands.

A taste of real America

It’s clear to see how American culture has influenced The Netherlands. But I also know how it is often misunderstood. There’s so much more to experience than just burgers, hotdogs, and fried chicken. I want to challenge these misconceptions and give Dutchies a taste of real America.

Inspiration

Like most traditional American tales, I come from a large and diverse family with a unique blend of heritage and culture.

I have roots from nearly every corner of the globe. My inspiration comes from the Americas and the Caribbean, as well as Western Europe and Asia. It's precisely these eclectic tastes and textures that make up Arocho's American Kitchen

Summertime sizzling

My passion for cooking started from a young age. As a 10-year old, I was glued to my father Tony’s side, standing at the grill. I still remember the first time he let me flip a burger and melt the cheese. By age 13, I took over at the helm and have been grilling ever since.

Even now, when I smell the smoke of the charcoal or hear the sizzle of the grill, I’m transported back to the countless summertime barbecues at my family home. Blasting music and cooking for hours with scores of friends, family, and visitors - all in our backyard.

The “magic” of Dutch BBQ

Collin and Susanne Arocho

My first experience at a Dutch barbecue was “magical”. Even today, I’m haunted by the image of a black hockey puck of “meat” sitting on an empty plate. No bun. No sauce. No seasoning to see. It was somehow both burnt and raw, all at the same time.  Susanne still tries to convince me this was a burger, but I remain uncertain.

Right then and there, I decided it was time to chase my “American Dream” in the Netherlands. That's why I'm ready to share my culture through my love and passion of cooking and grilling with the place I now call home.

Pro tip #1: Stay away from the burnt hockey pucks
